Amadeus is in the books

Well, Amadeus is finished

We had our last performance Saturday night. The last night of a show can sometimes be a letdown, but I honestly think it was the best performance of the entire run. Especially the first act. I think everyone was nailing it that night. I know I could feel it, and I think the audience could as well. Which is great, since my parents had flown in from Florida for the show, and my daughter had driven in from Denton.

Strike wasn’t much fun, of course (it never is, really) but at least it was done quickly. No time to dwell on the fact that we were saying goodbye to something that had been such a significant part of our lives.

I especially want to thank Jason for taking a chance and having faith in me. It would have been easy enough for him to say “forget it” and just go ahead and take the part of Salieri himself, after he had gone through three other actors in the role. But he didn’t. He let me take it and run with it. It was a real stretch for me, but with the help of Jason and the rest of the cast and crew, I was able to pull it off.

The comment I got most was that people were amazed at how I memorized so many lines, and in relatively short time (I got the part 3 weeks before we opened.) And, while I certainly appreciated the praise, it only went so far. Memorizing is something that usually comes pretty easily for me, so I didn’t feel like it was that big an accomplishment. But I did get some comments that really meant a lot to me. One person commented on my staying in character for the entire three hours. It may sound small, but that actually meant a great deal to me.

Now, it’s over. I’ll enjoy having more time, but I’m certainly going to miss the show. Though, there’s talk of “reviving” it next year to take to the AACT festival. So we’ll see … ;)

Amadeus

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything. I don’t have a particulary good excuse — just never got around to writing. But now, at least, I have some exciting news to report.

AmadeusI was cast in our upcoming production of Amadeus at BLT. Originally I was cast as Count Orsini-Rosenberg, a small but fun character part. That all changed on Saturday evening when I got a call from the director, Jason Howard. He asked me if I’d be willing to take over the role of Salieri!

For those unfamiliar with the show, Salieri is probably the biggest, meatiest role available in any show I know. I literally never leave the stage, from curtain to curtain. It means I’ve got a ton of lines to learn, and very little time to learn them, but I’m really excited by it. It’s going to be a really good show.

I hope that any of you who can get out to the Baytown area will be able to make it to a performance. We have shows February 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23nd at 8 p.m. and a Sunday matinee on February 17nd at 2 p.m. I believe thatticket sales to the general public begin n February 4th, but I wanted to get the word out so all my friends can start planning their calendars now. ;)

I’m a real Texan now

2008 Nissan FrontierOK. It’s official. I’m a Texan. I’m now the proud owner of a brand new 4×4 pickup truck! Though, I suppose to be truly authentic, it should have been an American made truck. But this will do. It’s a 2008 Nissan Frontier. The only thing missing is a gun rack, but I suspect Wendy would divorce me if I even attempted to have one put in. ;)

I know it’s a bit ridiculous to have a four wheel drive vehicle in an area that only sees show once every 5-10 years. But we got stuck on the beach this past summer in my Xterra, and I wanted to be able to drive out to remote beaches without worrying about getting out again.

Guess I’ll have to start wearing a cowboy hat and boots, buy a big belt buckle, and say things like “I’m fixin ta head down the road a piece. Ya’ll wanna ride in my truck?”
